    Black silicon carbide has a Mohs hardness of 9.0-9.3, below diamond and boron carbide, and mechanical strength above alumina. Its sharp, friable grains cut efficiently into material surfaces.

    Silicon carbide's thermal conductivity is approximately three times that of silicon, reaching 120-140 W/mK. At 1000℃ in air, surface oxidation forms a protective silica layer. Its low thermal expansion coefficient, approximately 4.4×10⁻⁶/℃ over 25-1400℃, provides good thermal shock resistance.

About this product

Product Overview

Black silicon carbide, designated C, is a synthetic abrasive produced from quartz sand, petroleum coke or coal coke, and quality silica in a resistance furnace above 1800℃. It has a hexagonal crystal system, a black opaque appearance, and hardness between alumina and diamond. Sharp, friable grains provide electrical and thermal conductivity. Available in F8-F220, it is used in abrasive tools, refractories, blasting and polishing.
